Fortunecity

Although hosted from the USA, Fortunecity was the UK's answer to Geocities. Once again, there were districts, based around parts of the UK and other concepts, such as Rivendell, Campus, City Pubs, Roswell, Melting Pot, and Tatooine. I had sites in Ballykissangel district, which had an Irish flavour. In time, I was asked to be a Guide, doing the same sort of job that I had been doing at Geocities. The rewards were more tangible. Extra space of course, and I was expected to build a district site. We were given mousemats, notebooks and mugs. I still have mine somewhere.

Sadly, in 1998 Fortunecity went public. They took away the districts, and like Geocities, urls were based on one's username. They also stopped the guide program, which was a great pity. Fortunecity ended in 2012 and no longer provided free hosting. It was a great loss. In it's hay-day it had been a great place to host one's website.
